GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa softball team combined to outscore New Mexico Highlands 22-1 in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action
In the first game, Colorado Mesa's offensive onslaught continued as they pounded out 12 hits in a 13-0 win over the Cowgirls.
The Mavericks scored three runs in the first behind a three-run homer from
AnnMarie Torres over the center field fence. The home run was her third of the season.
Colorado Mesa tacked on six runs in the second inning highlighted by a two-run home run by
Tyneesha Houkamau and a solo homer by
Kaila Jacobi. It was Houkamau's first homer of the season while it was Jacobi's third of the year.
They added four more in the bottom of the third behind a two-run homer by
McKenzie Surface over the scoreboard in left center. It was Surface's first homerun of the season.
Surface (8-3) earned the win in the circle pitching three innings of shutout softball. She allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out four.
In the second game of the doubleheader,
Kimbri Herring pitched four innings and limited the Cowgirls to just one run on two hits while striking out four in a 9-1 win for Colorado Mesa.
Torres supplied the offense for Colorado Mesa. The freshman belted a grand slam in the Mavericks four-run second inning and finished the game with five runs driven in.
Kellie Mrofcza hit her fourth home run of the season in the first inning to get the scoring started.
Shortstop
Baylee Boren had two hits in the game as well.
Colorado Mesa improved their record to 14-4 on the season and 7-2 in the conference while Highlands falls to 6-17 and 3-7 in the RMAC.
The Mavericks and Cowgirls will complete the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11am.
