Surface Nearly Perfect in Win

GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – McKenzie Surface threw a one-hitter for Colorado Mesa in the first game of a double-header sweep of New Mexico Highlands Sunday (March 12).

The Mavericks won game one 9-0 and the second 10-2 to complete the series sweep of the Cowgirls.

Surface retired the first 13 batters she faced before Victoria Gonzales hit a double to left center field. The Mavericks retired the next two batters to preserve the shutout.

Surface struck out five batters in her ninth win of the season. The one-hitter was the first thrown by a Maverick since Rochelle Talamantes against Colorado Mines on April 2, 2016.

CMU scored one run in the first on a throwing error.

The Mavericks would be held scoreless until the fourth inning when it exploded for eight runs, on seven hits, five of which were singles. The inning was punctuated by back-to-back home runs by Brooke Hodgson and Kaila Jacobi.

The Mavericks capitalized on four Cowgirl errors in game two to score 10 runs, seven unearned, on eight hits.

After a scoreless first inning, the Mavericks scored three runs in the second inning without a hit.

Breanna Cabrera hit a solo homer to center field for the Cowgirls in the top of the third, but the Mavericks responded with two runs in the bottom half.

NMHU manufactured a run in the fifth, and CMU plated five in the bottom of the inning.

Zoe Pakes hit her third homer of the season to left center to drive in two of Mesa's five runs in the inning.

Andy Hancock (3-1) struck out four, walked one and allowed three hits and one run for CMU.

Kimbri Herring threw two innings in relief allowing one run on two hits.

Colorado Mesa (16-4, 9-2) will host UCCS March 18-19.
