GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team extended its winning streak to 11 games after sweeping a doubleheader against UCCS Saturday (March 18).
The Mavericks won game one 9-1 and game two 12-4.
The Mavericks opened the series with three runs in the first inning. Mesa's first run came on a double steal, and
Brooke Hodgson followed up with an RBI double. Hodgson came around to score on an RBI single by Kelli Mrofcza.
CMU's lead grew to 5-0 after
AnnMarie Torres drove in a pair of runs with a single to left center in the second.
UCCS manufactured one run in the fourth, but CMU scored two more in both the fourth and fifth including a two-run homer to right center by
Brooke Hodgson.
McKenzie Surface earned her 10
th win of the season striking out eight and giving up two hits.
In game two, the Mavericks batted through the order in the first inning scoring five runs on six hits and one Mountain Lion error.
Mesa added three more runs the following inning that was highlighted by a two-run homer to left field by
Kaila Jacobi.
UCCS scored two runs in the fourth, but CMU plated one in the fourth.
Meghan Waidler hit a single that scored two runs for UCCS in the fifth.
The Mavericks ended the game in the fifth thanks to a walk-off homer by Kelli Mrofcza that scored two. Mrofcza finished the game 4-for-4.
Alex Dufour and
Kaila Jacobi each finished 3-for-3.
Mesa has won its last seven games by run rule.
Kimbri Herring threw three scoreless innings to earn her fifth win of the season.
Andy Hancock gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits.
Colorado Mesa (18-4, 11-2) and UCCS (3-16, 2-12) will close out the series with a double-header Sunday (March 19).
