Softball Heads to St. George

Colorado Mesa will play five games at the Dixie State Tournament Feb. 9-11. Three of the five teams the Mavericks will face reside in the Pacific time zone with St. Edward's coming from the Central and Hawaii-Hilo is from the Hawaii time zone.  

Player of the Week
Brooke Hodgson was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week after hitting .667 (8-12) and leading the Mavericks to a perfect 4-0 record last weekend. The Rio Rancho, N.M., native scored seven runs, recorded six RBIs, 14 total bases and finished with a 1.167 slugging percentage.

First Pitch
Bailey Kleespies wasted no time starting her collegiate career. The Longmont, Colo., native hit a homerun off the first pitch in her first career at-bat at CMU. She finished the weekend batting .300 (3-10) with seven RBIs. 

Offensive Explosion
The Mavericks lead the RMAC in four offensive categories; batting average (.442), slugging percentage (.726), on-base percentage (.536) and scoring (49). 

Pitching
Colorado Mesa showed great pitching depth last week. The Mavericks used three different pitchers across four games and posted a 2.55 ERA. Andy Hancock threw a complete game one-hitter to earn her first career win for the Mavericks. Kimbri Herring threw a four-hit shutout for her first career win. McKenzie Surface, the RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, threw two complete games and has a 4.08 ERA. 

Run Count
Colorado Mesa opened the season with 22 runs against Neb.-Kearney. The last time the Mavericks scored more than 20 runs was in 2012 against UCCS. 

Strikeouts
McKenzie Surface struck out eight batters in her opening start against UNK. She was also the last Maverick to strike out eight batters in a game when she fanned eight batters in the win over Texas A&M-Commerce on May 5, 2016. 

Road Warriors
Colorado Mesa is slated to play its first 15 games on the road before hosting Adams State on March 4. 

Looking Ahead
Colorado Mesa will play six games next week. Mesa will play a doubleheader against Dixie State on Monday (Feb. 13) before opening RMAC play at Chadron State Feb. 25.
