GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's tennis team opened up the men's portion of the Maverick Duals with a split on Friday (Oct. 6).
The Mavericks toppled Colorado Christian with a sweep 9-0 in the morning matches at Canyon View Park. They won all three doubles matches and the six singles matches.
Lucas Martin and
Daniel Ness had the most highly contested doubles match and came away with a 9-7 win at No. 2.
Mitchell Steadman and
Lennon Braaten earned an 8-6 decision at No. 3.
The six singles matches were all won in straight sets to help the Mavs to their first win of the season.
In the afternoon match with RMAC rival MSU Denver, the Mavericks took two of the three doubles matches but fell in four of the six singles matches and dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to the Roadrunners.
Martin paired with
Alain De La Bastide at No. 2 doubles in the afternoon and picked up an 8-4 win over MSU Denver while
Max Lindqvist and Nick Farmen earned a 9-8 (7-4) tiebreak win at No. 3 doubles.
Martin then won a three-set thriller at No. 5 singles over Keenan Kaltenbacher 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-6.
De La Bastide picked up the Mavericks only other singles victory at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Calum Hayes.
The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of matches against CSU-Pueblo and Colorado College.
