Maverick swimmers complete weekend sweep with 180-81 win

GUNNISON, Colo.— The nation's 18th ranked Colorado Mesa University women's swimming team completed a weekend sweep two of their in-state Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals, besting Western State Colorado University, 180-81 on Saturday in the Mountaineers' Paul Wright Natatorium.

The Mavericks (4-4) won all but two of the 16 events on the day as they improved to 4-0 in RMAC duals this season.  All four of their losses have come to NCAA Division I foes.  CMU had swept all 11 events on Friday in a 144-56 win at Adams State and have won their four RMAC duals by a combined 716-220 score over the last two weekends.

Western State fell to 1-1 overall and in RMAC competitions.

Freshman Grace Payton was a double-winner for CMU as she took both the 200-yard backstroke and 400 individual medley.  She won the 200 back with a time of 2 minutes, 11.00 seconds, winning by 4.45 seconds, and turned in a time of 4:51.01 in the 400 IM to win by nearly 12 seconds (11.86).

Six other Mavericks were also 2-event winners, when including relays.  Sam White teamed with Maddie Pressler, Danielle Jefferies and Noel Scott to win the meet-opening 400 medley relay in 4:05.04 and ten came back to take the 200 breaststroke in 2:36.52, winning by 5.52 seconds.

Jefferies, who had claimed two individual wins on Friday at Adams State, took victory in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.10, good for a 6.73-second win.  Meanwhile, Scott anchored both relay teams to victory, capping the meet with a 54.14 second split in the 400 yard freestyle relay, which CMU won in 3:39.25.

Sierra Forbord, Maddie McClain and Kennedy Bright were the first three legs on that team.  Forbord also won the 100 free, individually in 54.61, while Bright took the 100 breast in 1:09.72.  McClain won the 500 free in 5:29.62.

Meanwhile, Isabelle Hansson and Megan Sirijariyavat won the longest and shortest events of the day, respectively.  Hansson claimed the 1650 free in 19:02.85 while Sirijariyavat won the 50 free in 25.07 seconds after winning Friday's meet in 25.20.

Celine Sargis was the Mavericks' other winner.  She won the 100 back for the second straight day, touching in 1:00.98 on Saturday.

The teams will do battle again on Nov. 17 when they will face off in the Mavericks' El Pomar Natatorium, CMU's next competition.
