Mavs go 3-1 at Midwest Duals

KEARNEY, Neb. – Colorado Mesa went 3-1 against four ranked opponents in the Midwest Duals, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. Below is a quick recap of each dual.

Colorado Mesa won seven of the ten bouts en route to a 33-11 victory of Super Region 4 foe Fort Hays State in the opening dual of the day. 141 pounder Daniel Salazar had a huge win over Super Region Four's top ranked wrestler at the weight in Tiger Brandon Ball 6-4 in overtime. The three-man combo of Payton Tawater, Jason Buhr and Bruno Nicoletti all picked up pins in the dual.

The Mavericks once again won seven of the ten bouts in a 28-13 win over Augustana. Austin Gaun had the big win of the dual with an 11-1 win over third-ranked Aero Amo. Tawater and Nicoletti provided the team with bonus point pins.

Colorado Mesa dominated the seventh-ranked Wolves with a 34-12 win. Northern State forfeited the first two weights but bonus point wins by Salazar, Buhr, Nicoletti and Gaun helped the spread in the dual match score. Tawater defeated sixth-ranked Blake Perryman 7-4 in the win.

The fourth-ranked Lopers won seven bouts in a 27-9 win over Colorado Mesa. Eight of the ten bouts were decided by decision with four of those coming by less than two points. Tommy Tawata came away with an upset win over 11th ranked Vlad Kazakov 11-5 in the dual's opening match.
 
Colorado Mesa will be back on the road next week when they wrestle against CSU-Pueblo and Colorado Mines.
