GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team upset No. 23 Brigham Young University-Hawaii 5-4 Wednesday afternoon (April 6).
"This was a great win for us, it was a real team effort," said head coach
Dan MacDonald. "It was probably one of the best wins of my career."
CMU went into the match with a 12-9 overall record and a two-game win streak while BYU-Hawaii had an 8-3 record and were riding on a three-game win streak.
The Mavs started off strong in doubles, taking two of three.
The No. 1 team of
Spencer Weinberg and
Andres Garcia-Rojas defeated Guillermo Ucelay and Simon Guillin 8-3.
Lucas Martin and
Max Lindqvist got an 8-4 win at No. 3.
BYU-Hawaii then bounced back by winning three singles matches at No. 3, 4 and 5.
Trevor Brown got the first singles win for the Mavericks. He won 6-4, 6-3 against Colton Pate at No. 6.
The No. 1 and 2 singles both went to three sets.
Spencer Weinberg won his first set 6-4 against Ibrahim Karmadzha, but lost the second set 1-6. Weinberg then pulled off a 7-5 victory to win at No. 1.
The match came down to the No. 2 singles.
Andres Garcia-Rojas beat Wei-Feng Lee in the first set 6-4 before narrowly falling 5-7 in the second set. With the set tied 5-5, Garcia-Rojas won two straight games to win the set and the match for the Mavericks.
Colorado Mesa (13-9) returns to play on Friday (April 8) when they travel to New Mexico to take on Western New Mexico and Colorado Christian.
