Series
This year marks the second of the RMAC vs. Heartland Shootout. Last year Mesa defeated Dallas Baptist 92-89 and fell to St. Edward's 74-61.Â
National Leader
Ryan Stephan is the top returning scorer in Div. II averaging 25.3 points per game in 2014-15. The Lakewood, Colo., native was named the RMAC Preseason Player of the Year and was named a preseason All-American by the Sporting News and Hero Sports. He currently ranks seventh in career scoring with 1,305 points (top-10 on page two). He scored 682 points last season, fifth most in a season by a CMU player.Â
Assists
Derek Biale led the RMAC and ranked sixth in Div. II in assists last season averaging 3.19 per game. The Redondo Beach, Calif., native tallied a school-record 16 assists at Western New Mexico last season. CMU led the league and ranked 17th in assists per game last season with 16.9. The Mavs ranked second in the RMAC and 13th in Div. II in assist-to-turnover ratio at +1.45.Â
Shoot the Three
Colorado Mesa averaged 9.7 three-pointers per game last season, second most in the conference and 17th in the nation.Â
Preseason Pick
Colorado Mesa was picked fourth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll. MSU Denver was picked first, followed by CSU-Pueblo and Colorado School of Mines.Â
700 Wins
Colorado Mesa's next win will the 700th in school history.Â
New Look
CMU welcomes 10 new players to this years team. Mesa has two Div. I transfers,
CJ Davis (Tenn.-Martin) and
Tanner Riley (Weber State), one Div. II transfer,
Trent Clay (Black Hills State), and two junior college transfers,
Kabir West (Northwest Tech) and
Eimer Lopez (Central Wyoming). The team also has five freshman,
Ridge Droskin,
Dante Fewell,
Brandon Hoffer,
Connor Nichols and
DJ Wells.Â
Looking Ahead
CMU will play a pair of non-conference games Nov. 20-21 in Gunnison, Colo. Mesa will face Cameron Friday and Eastern New Mexico Saturday.
