Football Set to Battle Javelinas

Colorado Mesa will travel to Kingsville, Texas this week looking for its second win of the season. The Mavericks will face Texas A&M - Kingsville Saturday at 6 pm. 

RMAC Player of the Week
Junior DJ Hubbard was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. Hubbard ran the opening kick-off back 95 yards for a touchdown. His other return was 49 yards. The Phoenix, Ariz., native also had one blocked field goal in the game and added 60 rushing yards and five receiving.

Price is Right
Senior Jordan Price was also a viable candidate for the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week after he returned two kick-offs for 92 yards, including an 80 yard return. The Fort Worth, Texas, native made seven tackles and had one interception. 

Kick Returns
Colorado Mesa and Texas A&M - Kingsville rank second and fourth in Div. II in kickoff return average. The Mavericks are averaging 59.0 yards per return and the Javelinas are averaging 57.0. Indianapolis leads all of the NCAA regardless of division at 94.0 yards per return. 

Blocked Kick
Colorado Mesa blocked Dixie State's first field goal attempt. The Mavericks have blocked a field goal in back-to-back games after Teddy Silano blocked a 43-yard attempt by Adams State in the final game of last season. Dixie blocked a punt by Mesa, the first blocked punt against Mesa since 2010 at Nebraska-Kearney. 

Turnovers
Colorado Mesa excelled in the turnover department against Dixie State. The Mavericks picked off two passes and forced five fumbles, recovering three. CMU ranks fourth in Div. II in turnover margin at +4. Ohio Dominican leads Div. II at +6 turnovers per game. Texas A&M - Commerce ranks tied for 144th at -3. 

Career Night
Sophomore Aric Kaiser enjoyed a career night against Dixie State. The Broomfield, Colo., native threw for a career-high 286 yards. He completed 21-of-40 passes, second most of his career. His 32 yards rushing was also a career-high. 

Catching Passes
Sophomore Daniel Perse posted a career night catching a career-high four passes for a career-high 103 yards, including a long of 57 yards. The Broomfield, Colo., native caught a 12-yard touchdown pass. His previous high was 78 receiving yards against Western State in 2013. 

Sack Attack
Colorado Mesa recorded five sacks for 36 yards against Dixie State. The five sacks were the most since CMU had eight sacks for 50 yards against Fort Lewis. 

Red Zone
CMU scored on five of its seven trips into the red zone. The Mavericks scored three touchdowns and kicked two field fields. The only time they didn't score was when they missed two field goals wide right. 

Punting
True freshman Austin Pitchford excelled in his college debut at punter. The Castle Rock, Colo., native averaged 35.9 yards on seven punts. He had two punts over 50 yards and four punts inside the 20-yard line. 

Non-Conference Success
Colorado Mesa has won two of its last three non-conference contests. The lone loss was a 26-0 decision at NCAA FCS member Montana State. 

Open the Season With a Win
With the win last week against Dixie State, Colorado Mesa has won its last two season openers. CMU opened the 2013 season with a 34-0 shutout over Menlo. 

Overtime
Saturday's overtime win was the first overtime game since a 24-17 loss at Chadron State in 2011. 

Looking Ahead
Colorado Mesa will open play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Sept. 20 with a road game at Adams State.
