GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's tennis team won the third RMAC Tournament Championship in school history with a hard fought 5-4 win over Western New Mexico Saturday (April 19). CMU's previous wins came in 2007 and 2011.
CMU took an early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Shannon McNamera and
Kristyn Wykert won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles, and
Emily Dodson and
Katie Metz earned an 8-3 decision at No. 3 doubles.
WNMU remained in the match with wins at No. 1, 2 and 4 singles.
Kristin Wykert defeated Dena Irvin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and
Katie Kirby earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
The tournament championship would come down to the No. 3 singles match between Shannon McNamera and Claudia Osuna. Osuna won the first set 5-7, but McNamera won the second 6-4. McNamera clinched the championship with a 6-3 third set win.
The Mavericks (12-7) earned the RMAC automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Regional.
The Mavericks earned several honors from the RMAC.
Dan MacDonald was named the RMAC Coach of the Year.
Natalie Martin and
Kaylee Davis each earned first-team All-RMAC honors.
Shannen McNamara and
Rachel McLaughlin were second-team selections.
Emily Dodson,
Kristyn Wykert and
Katie Kirby earned third-team accolades.
Kaylee Davis and
Rachel McLaughlin were first-team doubles selections.
Katie Metz,
Emily Dodson,
Kristyn Wykert and
Shannen McNamara all earned second-team honors for doubles.
