GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa won all six contested matches in a 29-18 win over New Mexico Highlands on Friday night in Brownson Arena. The Mavericks received one win by forfeit while the Cowboys picked up three wins by forfeit.
Paco Retana, moving up to the 285 weight class, pulled off the biggest win of the night that helped seal the win for Colorado Mesa. Retana led 10-9 after a furious first period that saw each wrestler on their back and near pin. Retana finally came away with a pin at the 5:20 mark of the match to pick up his team leading eighth pin of the season.
Trevor Donarski and
Jessie Hoffschneider each scored major decision victories at 157 pounds and 165 pounds respectively. Donarski improved his record to 13-4 on the season while Hoffschneider moved to 14-2 and 10-1 in duals.
Seventh ranked Chester Granard and
Jonathon Stelling each picked up wins in the match as well.
The Mavericks will travel to California next week to face Cal Baptist in a dual and compete in the California Collegiate Open in San Francisco.
