PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa Wrestling team started 2014 out on the right foot after picking up a 44-6 dual meet victory over Embry Riddle University on Thursday night. The Mavericks won nine of the ten bouts in the win.
James Martinez started the night off at 149 pounds and scored a 16-6 major decision victory over ERU's Colin Merkley to give the Mavericks an early 4-0 lead. Martinez improved his record to 9-1 on the season and is currently ranked third in the NWCA national rankings.
Jessie Hoffschneider pinned down his first opponent of the season tonight at 165 pounds. Hoffschneider now has four pins in his career and improved to 9-1 on the season.
Chester Granard improved his season record to 8-0 after picking up a 9-1 major decision win over Jose Cruz of Embry Riddle. Granard, currently ranked eighth in the country, picked up his third major decision win of the season.
At 125 pounds, freshman
Erick Vargas earned his first dual meet win of his career when he defeated fellow freshman Gilbert Martinez 6-1. Vargas improves his record to 5-7 on the season.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday in the Grand Canyon Duals in Phoenix. They will take on the Grand Canyon Lopes and the Minnesota Moorhead Dragons in a pair of duals.
