Colorado Mesa men's tennis team fell to first place Western New Mexico University 5-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Saturday morning in Pueblo. Saturday afternoon the Mavericks blanked Colorado College 9-0 in a non-league matchup.
Western New Mexico led 2-1 winning two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead. CMU's number one doubles team of Jordan Lyden and Spencer Weinberg defeated WNMU's number one team in pro-set tie break, 9-8 (7-5).
CMU recorded singles victories by Andres Garcia-Rojas at number three singles. Garcia-Rojas defeated Matthieu Covizzi 6-4, 6-2. Brason Hollabaugh won in three sets at number five singles (6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 10-7) in a third set super tie-break. Andres Hernandez defeated Roy Ulibarri 7-5, 6-1 at number six singles. Western New Mexico tallied singles wins at number four and two singles in straight sets. The match tied at 4-4 came down to number one singles where the Mustangs prevailed in three sets. Rodrigo Almeida defeated Jordan Lyden 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Saturday afternoon the Mavericks beat Colorado College in Colorado Springs by the score of 9-0. CMU won all three doubles matches allowing just a total of five games. In singles play all six Mavs registered straight set victories.
CMU will host the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 at the Elliott Tennis Center on the campus of Colorado Mesa University.
