Colorado Mesa women's tennis team will play Western New Mexico University for the 2013 RMAC Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday, April 21 at 9:00 am at the Elliott Tennis Center on the campus of Colorado Mesa University.
CMU clinched their semifinal match-up against No. two seed Metro State 5-3 to advance to the championship.
Saturday morning the No. 3 seed Mavericks beat Colorado Christian 5-1.
Against Metro State the Mavericks took an early 2-1 lead winning 2 of the 3 doubles matches. The number two team of
Kristyn Wykert and
Skyler Nelson won 8-2 and
Emily Dodson and
Katie Metz won 8-5 at number three doubles.
The Roadrunners won at number one singles to tie the match at 2-2. CMU's
Shannen McNamara defeated Alicia Holm, 6-3, 6-2 for a 3-2 CMU lead. The Mavs and Roadrunners split matches at number four and five singles. Freshman
Emily Dodson won 6-4, 6-3 at number five singles. Metro's number four player defeated
Rachel McLaughlin in three sets. CMU held a 4-3 lead with two matches remaining.
Kristyn Wykert clinced the dual after dropping the first set to Metro's number 3 player, Marianne Evangelista, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 for the Mavericks to advance to the championship.
Earlier in the day CMU handled Colorado Christian 5-1. The Cougars lone point came at number one doubles. Elizabeth Vertin and Katy Balli edged out CMU's
Kaylee Davis and
Shannen McNamara 8-6. CMU won at number two and three doubles, 8-2 and 8-0 respectively.
In singles action the Mavericks' McNamara, Wykert and
Nicole Lessley won at number two, three and six respectively to advance to the semifinal round.
CMU will play Western New Mexico for the RMAC title on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The winner of the match will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament.
