Sophomore Jordan Lyden was named Most Valuable Player at the ThunderWolves Tennis Classic hosted by CSU-Pueblo. Lyden was perfect on the weekend, posting a 3-0 singles record and teamed with partner Spencer Weinberg, a 3-0 doubles mark. Lyden and Weinberg were also named to the All-Classic Team for their outstanding doubles play.
CMU opened the tournament against No. 13-ranked Grand Canyon University. The Antelopes defeated CMU 6-3, with the Mavs' three wins coming from Lyden and Weinberg in singles and the duo posted a doubles victory at No. 1 doubles. Lyden beat GCU's number one singles player, Felix Schueller in three sets; 4-6, 7-5, 10-5. Weinberg won in straight sets at number two singles, defeating Yann Kaelin, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Grand Canyon posted wins at number three through six singles, including a three set win at number six. The Lopes' Andrew Meyer squeezed out a win over CMU's Trevor Brown, 3-6, 7-6, 10-6.
Lyden and Weinberg defeated Grand Canyon's number one doubles team 8-4 for the Mavericks lone doubles point in the dual.
In Saturday's schedule matches the Mavericks defeated Sonoma State 8-1 before falling later in the day to Bethany College, 3-6.
Against Sonoma State the Mavericks swept all six singles matches in several contested three set matches. Lyden convincingly beat Sonoma's number one player, 6-0, 6-3. Weinberg won a super-set tie-break at number two; 7-6, (5), 3-6, 11-9. Andres Garcia-Rojas (#3) and Brason Hollabaugh (#5) each won in straight sets. Andres Hernandez (#4) and Trevor Brown (#6) each defeated their Sonoma foes in three sets.
CMU won two of the three doubles matches against the SeaWolves. Lyden and Weinberg at number one and Garcia-Rojas and Hernandez at number two doubles secured victories.
In the final match of the tournament CMU fell to Bethany College 6-3. MVP Lyden was the lone Maverick to post a singles victory. Lyden beat Laurentsi Arakhamiya 7-6, (0), 2-6, 6-3. Bethany's won in straight sets at Number 2, 3 and 4 singles. Hollabaugh (#5) and Hernandez (#6) dropped their singles matches in three sets.
In doubles action the Mavs took an early 2-1 lead in to singles play with wins by Lyden/Weinberg at number one and Hollabaugh/Brown at number two doubles.
CMU will hit the road this weekend for a match at Division I, Northern Colorado on Saturday, March 24. CMU will play Monday at University of Neb.-Kearney and at Augustana College on Tuesday.
