Men's Basketball Rally Comes Up Short

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's basketball team rallied from an 11 point halftime deficit to Black Hills State before falling to the Yellowjackets 74-66 Saturday (Dec. 7) night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The loss snaps the Mavericks three-game losing streak. Mesa sits at 3-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

CMU turned the ball over 10 times over the opening 20 minutes, but did shoot 57-percent (12-21) from the field.

Ryan Stephan, who scored a career-high 25 points the previous night, scored 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting in the opening half. The Lakewood, Colo., native made both of his free throws in the second half to finish with a team-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

CMU slowly chipped away at the BHSU lead in the second half before Landon Vermeer gave the Mavs their first lead of the game 63-62 with a pair of free throws at 2:39.

Jerry Duckworth pulled CMU back within one with a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining. He finished with 13 points, including two of the team's four 3-pointers.

CMU nearly picked off the inbound pass before it went out of bounds and stayed with BHSU.

The Yellowjackets threw a long inbound pass to Brady Bisgaad who was fouled by Joe Kiely. After a short meeting the officials gave Kiely a fragrant foul.

The 'Jackets made four of their last five free throws for the win.

Joe Kiely was the third Maverick in double figures with 12 points.

Myles Henry scored a game-high 22 points off the bench to lead Black Hills. The Yellowjackets finished with a 38-21 advantage in points off the bench.
