#5 Mavericks Ground Skyhawks 89-65

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fifth ranked Colorado Mesa withstood a second half surge by Fort Lewis and came away with an 89-65 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win on Friday night in Brownson Arena.
 
At halftime, the Mavericks had a comfortable 44-30 lead. Colorado Mesa shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field and held the Skyhawks to just 34.4 percent (11-of-32.) Christen Lopez paced the Mavericks with nine points, four rebounds and five assists in the half.
 
The Skyhawks answered back early in the second half with a 14-2 run in the first four minutes and forty-two seconds to cut the lead to two at 46-44.
 
After a Maverick timeout, they were able to extend their lead and led by as many as 24 in the second half. The score was never tied and CMU never trailed in the contest.
 
Sharaya Selsor led all scorers with 29 points (14-of-15 from the free-throw line) with 22 points coming in the second half. She added eight rebounds and handed out six assists.
 
"That's the thing with the new rules, how do stop her? She is so aggressive and getting to the basket," Maverick Head Coach Taylor Wagner said about Selsor.
 
Four other Mavericks scored in double figures. Christen Lopez had 15 points, Aubry Boehme had 11, Taylor Rock and Siu Lo'Amanu each had 10.
 
Colorado Mesa shot 49.1 percent from the field, including 40 percent from behind the three-point arc, and 84.4 percent from the free-throw line. The Mavericks outrebounded the Skyhawks 43-29 and handed out more assists, 22-13.
 
The Skyhawks shot 37.9 percent from the field and only made two three-point baskets on the night. Erike Richards led Fort Lewis with 21 points.
 
"We have to continue to play better defense. 65 points is too many," Wagner added
 
The Mavericks will close out 2013 with a game against RMAC rival Adams State at 5:30pm in Brownson Arena.
