Men's Hoops Dominates Fort Lewis 93-67

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa poured in 57 second half points in a 93-67 home win over Fort Lewis Friday (Dec. 20) night at Brownson Arena. Mesa's 93 points were the most the team has scored since it scored 92 at Adams State on Feb. 24, 2012.

Sophomore Ryan Stephan was a major factor for the Mavericks scoring a game-high 21 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. The Lakewood, Colo., native also had a stand-out night defensively holding Fort Lewis's Alex Herrera, who entered the contest averaging over 20 points a game, to just eight. Herrera also had only five rebounds.

Stephan's 21 points were also a major reason the Mavericks outscored the Skyhawks 36-16 in the paint.

The Mavericks got plenty of offense from junior Mike Melillo and sophomore Joe Kiely who each finished with 18 points. Melillo added nine rebounds, and Kiely had six assists.

Junior Landon Vermeer was the fourth CMU starter in double figures scoring 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.

CMU shot 56-percent (33-59) from the field, including 68-percent (17-25) in the second half, and 81-percent (21-26) from the line. The Mavericks made more free throws (21) than the Skyhawks attempted (20). FLC shot 38-percent (21-55) from the field and 65-percent (13-20) from the line.

Rebounding was another bright spot for Mesa. CMU finished with a 47-23 edge on the glass, including a 13-6 advantage on the offensive end. Mesa concluded the game with a 13-0 edge in second chance points.

The game was not without a few miscues as each team had 18 turnovers.

Jared Smith led FLC with 15 points.

Mesa improves to 6-3 overall on the season and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and will host Adams State Saturday (Dec. 20).
