Colorado Mesa (12-3, 9-2 RMAC) men's basketball extended their win streak to five games, defeating Western State Colorado (7-8, 6-5 RMAC) 67-49 on Saturday night inside Brownson Arena.
CMU was led by Jeff Hart's game high 21 points, 17 coming in the second half for the senior guard. Hart has posted back-to-back 20-point games and five consecutive double-digit games. Hart finished with seven rebounds and one assist.
Mike Melillo registered 13 points and five rebounds. Paul Walter led all players with 11 rebounds to go along with his nine points, three assists and two blocked shots. Senior Chandler Burgon finished with seven points, three rebounds and one blocked shot in his first game back this season following shoulder surgery. Burgon played 13 minutes, hitting 2 of 3 from the field and a perfect, 3 for 3 from the foul line.
CMU led 33-23 at the break on a Landon Vermeer trey with 1:31 remaining in the first half. Vermeer finished with eight points.
The Mavericks opened the second half on a 6-0 run and held its largest lead of 21 points with just over 2-minutes remaining in the contest. Western State closed the gap to six points (50-44) at the 7:27 mark when Jeff Hart scored nine straight points and pulled down three rebounds in a span 3-minutes to push the Maverick lead to 59-46 with 4:28 left in the game.
Western State was led by Mike Vandahl's 15 points. The Mountaineers shot 36.5 percent (19-52) from the field. CMU shot 42.4 percent (25-29) in the contest. Both teams struggled from the foul line; CMU was 12 of 22 and the Mountaineers connected on 6 of 13 free throws.
CMU will host Metro State next Friday in Brownson Arena. The Roadrunners are ranked second in the country and undefeated on the year at 15-0, 11-0 in RMAC action.
