Colorado Mesa University men's hockey team opened the 2012 season at University of New Mexico on Friday evening at the Outpost Ice Arena in Albuquerque. CMU fell 9-4 to the Lobos in its first of two games at UNM.
Saturday evening the Mavericks lost 9-6 but pulled to within one goal late in the game before the Lobos put the game away with two empty net goals.
In game one Cole Sweeney led the Mavericks with two goals and an assist. Phillip Flink and Trevor Needham each tallied their first goals of the season. Flink added an assist and finished the night with two points. Logan Cole and Grayson Hussey each recorded an assist for the Mavs. Trevor Roffe made his season debut in the net playing 50 minutes and teammate Tristin Close played 10 minutes. The two Mav goalkeepers faced a combined 57 shots from the Lobos and recorded 48 saves.
Saturday night the Mavericks Hunter Smith scored a season high three goals in the Mavs' 9-6 loss at UNM. Charlie Barnum, Cole Sweeney and Alec Lever each scored a goal as the Mavericks put up six goals on the Lobos. Jason Meiring led all players with three assist and Barnum assisted on two goals. Sweeny and Flink each had an assist. Trevor Roffe played all 60 minutes in the net and was spectacular in recording 43 saves off the Lobos 52 shots.
After two games the Mavs are led by Cole Sweeny and Hunter Smith's three goals each. Jason Meiring has a team high three assists and Sweeny leads the team with five points.
CMU (0-2) will return to action on October 5-6 at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. The Cowboys open up the 2012 season on September 28 at Colorado State University at the EPIC Ice Arena.
