Mavs Topple #12 Metro State in Overtime 67-64

Colorado Mesa upended No. 12 Metro State College 67-64 in overtime on Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the RMAC Shootout in Denver at the campus of Metro State. CMU (15-12, 12-10 RMAC) will advance to the RMAC Shootout semifinal versus Fort Lewis College on Friday, 5:30 p.m. at the Colorado State Fair Events Center in Pueblo.

Colton Burgon's layup with 11 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 60-60, sending the first round playoff game in to overtime. Metro scored first on a layup and made free throw following a foul for early 63-60 lead 30-seconds in to the extra period which eventually would be the only points the Roadrunners would score. CMU went on a 7-0 run on a layup by Colton Burgon at the 2:21 mark to pull to within one point (62-63). Following a steal by Mike Melillo and a layup with 45 seconds left, CMU took a 64-63 lead. Daniel Estes was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws for a 65-63 lead with 23 seconds remaining. A miss trey by Metro resulted in the Roadrunners fouling Jeff Hart with 10-seconds left. Hart sank both free throws to extend the lead to 67-63. Metro's attempt at two 3-pointers missed and CMU defeated number 2 seed, Metro State (22-6, 17-5 RMAC).  

Mike Melillo finished with a game high 21 points and team high eight rebounds in the contest. Melillo was 8 of 10 from the field, (2-2 treys) and 3 of 4 from the foul line.

Four Mavericks registered double digit figures in the third meeting between the teams this season. CMU and Metro split the season series.

 Jeff Hart recorded 12 points and seven rebounds, including 5 of 6 from the free throw line and the final two free throws in overtime. Michael Bear and Colton Burgon had 10 points each. Burgon had five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the game. Chandler Burgon pulled down seven rebounds in the contest and Shawn King had five boards and three assists.

CMU shot 51 percent from the floor (23-45), hit 4 of 6 from the 3-point line and 17 of 31 from the foul line. Metro shot 29.8 percent (25-84), just 1 of 16 from beyond the arc, and hit 12 of 18 free throws. CMU committed 25 turnovers to the Roadrunners 14. CMU tallied 14 assists and five steals.

The Mavericks will face Fort Lewis College on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks defeated host Adams State 77-73 in overtime.
