After dipping below .500 mark for the first time since the first weekend of the season, the Mavericks looked to get back into business when Regis University came into town Friday night. With Katrina Selsor and Hillary Duncan out with leg injuries, the task would not be easy. As the Mavs committed more fouls and more turnovers, the Rangers were able to come into Brownson and take a win, winning 65-54.
“We go to practice and we seem like we have everything down,” Leanndra Gilbert said. “We just didn't transfer all that into tonight”
The Mavs struggled to find a rhythm early as the Rangers jumped out to an early 14-7 lead. Gilbert and Kelsey Sigl scored the team's first 15 points. The Mavs were able to make a run and tie the game at 19 apiece with under five minutes to go in the half. Regis answered with a 15-7 run, however, and led 34-26 at halftime.
Gilbert led all Maverick scorers with 10 first half points as she went perfect from the field and free throw line. Sigl and Alaina Brennan each added seven points, with Sigl bringing in five rebounds.
The Rangers started the second with another run to extend their lead to 13 points. As the Mavs battled foul trouble, they struggled to go on any kind of run to make the game closer. Regis was able to match any basket made by CMU to keep them in a comfortable position. At the end, the Mavs couldn't get shots to fall, and fell to the Rangers 65-54.
Sigl led all Maverick scorers with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Gilbert finished with 16 points and five rebounds. As a team, the Mavs committed 25 turnovers with just 10 assists.
With the loss, the Mavs fell to 8-10 overall and 6-8 in RMAC play. Rebounding from the game won't be easy as No. 4 Metro State comes to town tomorrow night in Brownson Arena.
“We will just have to lock down and do what we do best,” Gilbert said. “We can't make as many mistakes as we did. They are number four for a reason.”
