CMU (8-7, 6-5 RMAC) men's basketball team dropped a 58-57 contest at Western State (6-9, 4-7 RMAC) Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Trailing 58-57 with 23-seconds remaining in regulation the Mavericks could not get one of two last second shots to fall. A missed shot, offensive rebound and put-back all fell short as time expired.
CMU held a 26-22 halftime lead and led by as many as five points in the first twenty minutes of action. CMU scored six of the final eight points to take a four point lead in to intermission.
The second half remained tight as the Mountaineers' largest lead of the game came at the 7:15 mark on a dunk by Weylan Towns for a 49-43 lead. CMU took a one point lead with 1:28 remaining on a layup by Michael Bear for a 54-53 advantage. WSC pushed the lead to four (58-54) on back-to-back baskets, including a trey by Steven Aldridge. A trey by CMU's Landon Vermeer with 23 seconds pulled CMU to within one point (57-58). A CMU rebound off a missed free throw attempt by WSC set up the Mavericks final two attempts as the buzzer sounded.
Kevin Screen led all players with a game high 16 points. Michael Bear finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Colton Burgon had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench. Mike Melillo recorded a game high, 10 rebounds.
CMU will travel to Colorado School of Mines on Friday, January 20.
