Mesa State men's tennis team used strong singles play to overcome a 1-2 deficit following doubles action to defeat host CSU-Pueblo Friday morning at City Park.
Jaco Gerbrands and Andres Hernandez defeated CSU-P's number one doubles team 8-3 to start the match. The Mavericks won five of the six singles matches to roll to a 6-3 victory. CSU-P won at number one singles and the Mavs swept number 2 through 6 singles all in straight sets.
MSC is ranked number 5 in the most recent central region poll took on number 2-ranked Neb.-Kearney Friday afternoon.
The Lopers won all three doubles matches, holding on to win at number one doubles in a tie-break, 9-8 (7-2) and winning 9-7 at number two doubles.
UNK used solid play in singles to win five of the six singles matches on the way to an 8-1 regional victory.
MSC's number 3 player Andres Hernandez defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-0 for the Mavs lone point.
MSC will host four matches this week beginning Thursday afternoon at 3:30 versus Colorado Christian.
Friday MSC will play Montana State Billings (2:30) and Saturday host CSU-Pueblo at 2:30.
Sunday MSC will close out their home schedule against non-conference opponent Sonoma State at 9 a.m.
All matches will be played at the Elliott Tennis Center on the campus of Mesa State College.
