Colton Burgon's career high 27 points helped lead Colorado Mesa University (4-2, 2-0) to a league victory Saturday night over visiting Neb.-Kearney (3-2, 1-1) 79-53.
Burgon was nearly perfect in 21 minutes of action shooting 11 of 12 from the floor and hitting 5 of 6 from the foul line. He pulled down eight rebounds, had two blocked shots and one steal.
CMU pulled away in the second half after holding a 26-20 lead at intermission. The Mavericks committed 14 first-half turnovers but finished the half with 20 rebounds and going 12 of 14 from the free throw line to hold a six point edge.
Colorado Mesa opened the second half with a 24-6 run in the first eight minutes, including 11 consecutive points by Colton Burgon. CMU out-scored UNK 53-33 in the second half.
CMU shot 62 percent (26-42) from the field and 26 of 36 from the charity stripe. UNK shot 28 percent (19-67) and was out-rebounded by CMU 41-31.
Jeff Hart and Mike Melillo each finished with 10 points. Hart had a game high five assists and Melillo recorded six rebounds and three assists. Chandler Burgon tallied a game high nine rebounds and finished with six points and three blocked shots.
CMU will travel to Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands this weekend.
