CMU nets overtime victory at NM Highlands, 75-72

Colorado Mesa (6-2, 4-0) extended their win streak to six games with a 75-72 overtime victory at New Mexico Highlands (4-4, 0-4) Saturday night in Las Vegas, N.M.

Tara Gehring's three-point shot as time expired in regulation sent the game in to overtime. CMU out-scored the Cowgirls 10-7 in the extra period as Gehring scored the first three points to give CMU a 72-69 lead. NMHU tied the game on a trey by Coca Whitley. Hillary Duncan's jumper with 2:21 remaining gave the Mavs a 72-69. The Cowgirls would tie the game for the final time (72-72) at the 1:22 mark after two made free throws by Alyssa Lopez. CMU closed out the game with Hillary Duncan hitting 1 of 2 from the foul line (1:22) and Katrina Selsor's two free throws with 14-seconds left in the contest. NMHU fired up two three-point attempts to tie the game as time expired.

CMU raced out to a 12-0 lead to start the game and held a 26-19 halftime advantage. CMU led by as many as 16 points (5:45) in the first half. NMHU battled back and took their first lead of the game with 9:35 left in second half. The two teams battled the remaining of regulation with neither team holding more than a four point lead.

Hillary Duncan led the Mavs with 16 points off the bench. Gehring's 12 points included 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, with her final trey coming at the buzzer to send the game in to overtime. Gehring and Selsor each finished with a team high seven rebounds.  Amy Weitzeil had 10 points and Hanna Bowden recorded nine points and six boards. Alaina Brennan had nine points and four rebounds.

CMU will return home this weekend to host No. 7-ranked Fort Lewis College on Friday night at 5:30 pm. Saturday the Mavs will host Adams State College at 5:30 pm.
