Colorado Mesa University's season opener at Cal-State Chico on Friday night came down to the final seconds as the Wildcats scored the final five points in a 62-59 Chico State win.
CMU's Kelsy Sigl's three point shot with 37-seconds remaining in regulation put the Mavericks up 59-57 before Chico State's Jazmine Miller took control scoring the final five points of the contest. Miller scored on a trey with 20-seconds remaining for a 60-59 lead. A CMU turnover with 7-seconds forced the Mavs to foul. Miller knocked down two free throws to seal the win.
Sigl led all players with 19 points and posted a team high eight rebounds. Tara Gehring recorded 14 points, including 10-second half points and pulled down seven rebounds. Leanndra Gilbert scored 11 points off the bench, hitting 2 of 2 from the 3-point line and finished with three rebounds. CMU turned the ball over 29 times resulting in 27 points for the Wildcats.
Chico held a two point lead at half (29-27) and within the first four minutes of the second half extended the lead to 10 points. CMU maintained a single point deficit and finally took their first lead of the second half on a 3-point shot by Gehring with 5:27 remaining in the game and a 50-48 lead. The final five minutes of the game saw three ties and no more than a two point swing by either team. Chico's Jazmine Miller's final three throw of the game gave the Wildcats the three point victory. Miller finished with 16 points.
CMU shot 44.7 percent from the field (21-47) and 52.2 percent (12-23) from the foul line. Chico shot 42 percent (24-57) from the floor and 83 percent (10-12) from the free throw line. CMU out-rebounded Chico 39-28.
The Mavericks will play Saturday night at Sonoma State (4 pm MT) before returning home to host the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic November 25-26 at Brownson Arena.
