Colorado Mesa men's basketball lost in the title game, 67-55 to No. 22 Seattle Pacific at the Dixie State College Classic in St. George, Utah. The Falcons rallied in the second half behind David Downs' 24-second half points.
CMU led 25-18 at half and never trailed in the first half shooting 45 percent from the floor. Landon Vermeer and Colton Burgon combined for 10-first half points and Shawn King added four. CMU led by as many as 11 points with 7:13 remaining in the half.
Seattle Pacific opened the second half with a 9-0 run to pull to within two points (25-27). After making just one trey in the first half, the Falcons hit five in the second half. SPU tied the game at 35-35 at the 13:18 mark and took the lead for good on a trey by Riley Stockton for a 39-27 lead with 12:25 remaining in regulation. The Falcons took advantage of CMU turnovers and missed free throws to extend the lead to 12 points with 6:18 remaining.
CMU pulled to within seven points on several occasions in the final minutes before the Falcons closed out the game on a 6-1 spurt.
Colton Burgon was the only Maverick to finish in double digits, scoring 15 points off the bench. He had a team high eight boards and tallied two blocks and one assist. Burgon was named to the All-Classic Team.
Mike Melillo registered seven rebounds and Landon Vermeer finished with nine points and three rebounds. Michael Bear recorded eight points, two rebounds, a block and a steal.
CMU shot 43.2 percent from the floor (19-44), 62 percent from the foul line (15-24) and hit just 2 of 11 from the three point line. SPU shot 32 percent from the field (15-47) and connected on 6 of 18 treys. The Falcons went to the foul line 38 times, hitting 31-of-38 from the line.
CMU will return to action when they host the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Tip-off Classic November 25-26 at Brownson Arena. CMU will play Southern Virginia on Friday and Dixie State on Saturday night. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
