Mavericks, #7 Skyhawks Fit To Be Tied

Box Score     The Mavericks not only looked to wrap up the weekend with a win at Walker Field, but they also looked to get revenge on seventh ranked Fort Lewis, who beat the Mavs last Wednesday on a late goal. It didn't come in the way they wanted, but the Mavs handed Fort Lewis just their second tie of the year as the two teams played to a 0-0 tie.
“We are not satisfied,” coach Erin Sharpe said. “On paper, it looks like we should be because we weren't supposed to get any points out of this game, but we got one. But we had our opportunities in the game that we didn't capitalize on.”
The first half was slow both sides. Neither Colorado Mesa nor Fort Lewis could get a goal and both managed less than five shots on goal, with Fort Lewis taking four and the Mavs taking just two. Goalkeeper Sarah Schnetzler made the four saves and Kelci Crispe took both shots.
Much of the second half played out like the first half. Defense was key to both sides as neither team were able to get many shots off or score a goal. Fort Lewis managed just one second half shot as the Mavs had more opportunities with three shots on goal, none finding the back of the net.
“I think everyone did a good job on the defense,” Schnetzler said. “I have to do my job just like everyone else has to do their job. As long as I'm doing mine, it gives us all more opportunities.”
In the first overtime, Mavericks' Daniela Salinas nearly ended the game with a shot that just missed the goal by a matter of inches. With that being the only legit chance by either team on the first overtime, the score remained tied heading into the second overtime.
The Mavericks again had an opportunity late in the second overtime as Tayler Franklin's header just missed and Crispe's floater hit the top crossbar. With the help of the defense, Schnetzler and the Mavs were able to keep the final score, 0-0.
“We did not play very well in that first half,” Sharpe said. “If we were to get our offense going from minute one instead of minute 46, we would have been a lot better off. Fort Lewis is a really good team, and we hit the post twice, so we are doing our part. It's just a matter of inches.”
With the tie, the ladies tied both games this weekend and now have an overall record of 5-4-2 and 4-1-2 in RMAC play. The Mavs will travel to Denver to take on Metro State Friday and then Colorado Mines Sunday.
