Mesa State men's tennis team opened the 2011 season at Division I University of Northern Colorado, Saturday evening in Greeley. UNC defeated the Mavericks 7-0 in each school's opening match of the season.
Mesa State's #1 doubles team of Jaco Gerbrands and Joseph Aragon defeated UNC's #1 team of Robbie Edwards and Alexander Mondaco 8-2.
In Division I competition each singles match is worth 1 team point and the team that wins 2 of the 3 doubles matches wins 1 team point. UNC won at #2 doubles and #3 doubles to claim the team point.
MSC's #2 doubles team of Brason Hollabaugh and Andres Hernandez fell 8-5 to Michael Moya and Jeff Carlson.
In singles action Hollabaugh fell in three sets at #2 singles to Robbie Edwards, winning the first set 6-3, before falling 3-6, 2-6.
Gerbrands, the Mavs #1 singles player fell 7-5, 6-2 and Hernandez (#3 singles) lost 6-4, 6-4 to Alexander Mondaco.
MSC will return to action February 4 at Utah State University.
