Championship run comes to an end

Mavs fall to #18-St. Edwards (TX), 6-0

Mesa State men's tennis team in its first ever NCAA Division II National Championship fell to #18-St. Edward's (TX) 6-0 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., Friday evening.

The Hilltopper's, narrowly winning all three doubles matches, took a commanding 3-0 LEAD Friday night at Sanlando Park tennis complex. MSC's number two and three doubles team lost by the identical score of 9-7. Rashad Khamis and Niko Carrizo (#2) fought back from a 6-3 deficit and tied the match a 7-7.  St. Edward's pulled out the victory with a break of service. Andres Hernandez and Brason Hollabaugh fell 9-7 at number 3 doubles action. The Hilltopper's number one doubles team of Mick Walter and Boris Barrios defeated MSC's Jordan Chomko and Nick Provenza 8-4.

St. Edward's carried the momentum in to singles action winning three of the six matches closing out the dual 6-0. Two singles matches ended simultaneously which resulted in the 6-0 score. A team dual is clinched once a team reaches five victories.

Ned Boone defeated Jordan Chomko 6-1, 6-4 at number one singles. Justin Raiti posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Andres Hernandez at number three singles and Bernard Lancaster defeated Niko Carrizo 6-1, 6-1 giving the Hilltopper's the 6-0 win, advancing them to the quarterfinal round Thursday afternoon.
