Mesa State men's tennis team improved to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in RMAC action, extending their dual win streak to eight with wins over CSU-Pueblo 9-0, Grand Canyon 5-4, MSU-Billings 5-3 and Neb.-Kearney 6-3. All four dual matches were played in Denver Friday and Saturday.
Friday's doubleheader started with the Mavs sweep over CSU-Pueblo 9-0. MSC did not drop a set in the singles and recorded their first conference win this spring.
In a non-conference match-up Friday afternoon the Mavs defeated Grand Canyon 5-4. MSC won 2 of the 3 doubles matches and won at number 4, 5 and 6 singles to clinch the dual victory. Nick Provenza (#4) and Niko Carrizo (#6) won in straight sets and Brason Hollabaugh (#5) clinched the dual win in a three set victory over GCU's Brian Kirby, 6-1 in the third set.
Saturday MSC took on RMAC associate member in tennis; Montana State Billings, defeating the Yellow jackets 5-3. MSC held a 2-1 lead after doubles action and clinched the dual with singles victories by Andres Hernandez (#3), Nick Provenza (#4) and Brason Hollabaugh (#5). Niko Carrizo (#6) was leading in his match 6-4, 1-0 when the dual was clinched with five wins.
The men wrapped up the weekend defeating Neb.-Kearney 6-3. The Mavs swept all three doubles pro-sets and won 3 of the 6 singles matches for the victory. Jordan Chomko (#1), Hernandez (#3), Hollabaugh (#5) each won in straight sets.
Ranked second in the latest regional poll, MSC will host top ranked Western New Mexico this Friday at 3 pm. Saturday MSC will host Metro State at 2:30. The Maverick Club is hosting a Fan Appreciation Day Saturday at 1 pm. The picnic begins at 1 pm at the Elliott Tennis Center and at 2:30 the Mavericks will take on the Roadrunners from Metro State.
