Mavs drop regional match-up

Fall to WNMU 8-1

MSC men ranked #2 in the latest central regional rankings dropped their first home dual match this spring to #1 ranked Western New Mexico University 8-1 Friday afternoon.

The Mustangs swept all three doubles matches, edging the Mavs 8-6 at number 1 and number 3 doubles respectively.

WNMU carried that momentum in to the singles action winning 5 of the 6 matches. MSC's Rashad Khamis tallied the lone point for the Mavs winning at #2 singles. Khamis led his opponent, Henning Thrien, 6-3, before Thrien retired due to an injury.

Seniors Jordan Chomko (#1) and Nick Provenza (#4) each pushed their opponent to three sets. Chomko won the first set 6-3, before falling to Yair Banuelos 6-1, 6-3 in the final two sets.

Local standout Nick Provenza dropped the first set 6-4, broke back to win the second set 7-5, setting up the third set super tie-break. WNMU's Flavio Rudda prevailed 10-6.

MSC will host Metro State College Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Prior to the match the Maverick Club will host a tailgate party starting at 1 p.m.
