Mavericks Pin Down Win vs. Pueblo

        The Mesa State Mavericks took on the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves in RMAC dual action. Mesa State would go onto win five of the nine contested matches en route to the win. Here are how the bouts would shake down.

        The meet started at 197 pounds with Thunderwolf Tony Chavarria and Maverick Shane Miller. The first period would remain scoreless with Chavarria starting down to start the second period. Chavarria would escape six seconds into the period. Chavarria scored a takedown with roughly twenty seconds left with Miller escaping almost immediately. Miller chose down to start the third period. Miller would escape thirty seconds into the period. With about a minute remaining Chavarria would score a takedown that would essentially clinch the match. Final score 8-3. Chavarria moved to 21-8 on the season and 5-2 in the RMAC while Miller fell to 12-16, 2-6 in the RMAC.

        The heavyweight match would pit CSU-Pueblo's Patrick Carey against Mesa State's Trevor Stapp. The first period would remain scoreless with Carey taking the bottom to start the second period. Carey would escape six seconds into the period. The score would remain 1-0 as we headed to the third period. Stapp chose down and got an escape roughly eight seconds into the period. The score would now stand at 1-1. Carey would score a takedown with thirty seconds left in the match and Carey would release him immediately. The match would end at 3-2 with a win for Patrick Carey. Carey is now 27-9 on the season and Stapp is now 8-12.

        Mesa State's Tyler Nelson would receive a forfeit at 125 pounds evening the score at 6-6.

        At 133 pounds Chris Rubalcaba would pin CSU-Pueblo's Kenny Porter at 2:17 into the match. Rubalcaba's record improved to 18-12 on the season and 3-5 in the RMAC. 

        141 pounds saw Freshman Trevor Donarski take on Thunderwolf Nick Stahler. Donarski would score an early takedown and cut him immediately. Donarski would lead 2-1 after one period. Stahler chose down to start the second period. Stahler would get an escape thirty seconds into the match then ten seconds later Donarski would score a takedown. Donarski then led 4-2. Stahler got another escape with Donarski taking him down quickly again. After two periods, Donarski led 6-3. Donarski would choose neutral to start the third period. Donarski would get a takedown one minute into the period. Donarski would win the match 10-4. Donarski is now 17-9 on the season while Stahler falls to 14-9. Mesa State now leads the dual 15-6.

        Mesa State's Jon Gappmaier would take on CSU-Pueblo's Ben Collins at 149 pounds. Gappmaier scored a takedown one minute into the period. Gappmaier would ride Collins for 43 seconds before Collins escaped. Gappmaier would score another takedown about 25 seconds later. The score after the first period would be 4-1 in favor of Gappmaier. The two would start neutral to start the second period. Gappmaier would then throw Collins to his back and score a pin at 4:19. Gappmaier's record now stands at 12-10. Mesa State would now lead the dual 21-6.

        At 157 pounds, 6th ranked Chase Walker squared off with Thunderwolf Louie Desantis. The score would remain 0-0 after the first period. Desantis chose down to start the second period and would get an escape 17 seconds into the round. Walker would then score a takedown 20 seconds later. Walker would lead 2-1 after two periods. Walker would choose down to start the third period and would score an escap 10 seconds into the period to lead 3-1. Walker would score a penalty point to extend the lead to 4-1 for backing off the mat. Walker would score another takedown to ensure the win. Walker won 7-1 and is now 16-6 on the season and Desantis fell to 16-12. The dual score would now sit at 24-6.

        Senior Cole Johnson matched up with CSU-Pueblo's Justin Grant at 165 pounds. The score would remain 0-0 heading to the second period with Grant choosing down. Grant would score a reversal 30 seconds into the period and would lead 2-0. Johnson would choose down to start the third period. Johnson would score a stalling point to cut the lead 2-1. Johnson would score a reversal with Grant getting a riding point and we would head to overtime tied at 3-3. Grant would get a takedown with 13 seconds left in the period to secure the win 5-3. Grant's record is now 19-10 and Johnson 5-7.

        At 174 pounds, Maverick Tyler Juby wrestled up three weights against Thunderwolf Kellen Desmond. A flurry of points found Juby on top after the first period 13-4. Desmond chose top to start the period. Juby would get an escape with 5 seconds left in the period. Juby chose top as we start the third period. Desmond would score an escape with one minute left in the final period, Juby would still lead 14-5. Juby would go onto win 14-7. Juby is now 11-5 on the season while Desmond fell to 9-17. Mesa would lead the dual 27-9.

        Maverick Matthew Chavez, wrestling up two weight classes, squared off with Thunderwolf Adam Carey. Carey would lead 8-2 after the first period. Both would score points in the second period but Carey would still lead 10-4. Carey chose top to start the third with Chavez scoring a quick escape to cut the lead 10-5. Carey would go onto win the match 19-7. Carey is now 21-15 on the season while Chavez fell to 3-7.

        The Mavericks would win the final home dual of the season 27-13. Mesa State will be on the road next week at Colorado Mines to wrap up the dual season on Wednesday.
