Mavs Beat Highlands on the Road, 90-89

Tied for First Place in West Division

Brian Kenshalo's career high 22 points (6-7 treys) and Ryan Mathews' 21 points help lead the Mavericks to a 90-89 win at New Mexico Highlands. The win improved MSC to 16-10 overall and 13-5 in league play. MSC and Highlands are tied for first in the west division, with the Mavericks holding the tiebreaker over the Cowboys. MSC plays at CSU-Pueblo Saturday night, and the Cowboys host Western State College in the final regular season game.

MSC had four players in double digits; Kenshalo, Mathews, Jase Herl finished with 16 points and a team high nine rebounds. Jake Swartzendruber recorded 11 points.

The Mavericks held a four point halftime lead (44-41) and neither team lead by more than seven points in the second half. NMHU tied the game at 78 with 3:49 remaining in regulation. Two made free throws by Jase Herl gave the Mavs a lead they would not relinquish. MSC held a five point lead with 44 seconds left that the Cowboys cut down to one several times before the final buzzer. Swartzendruber made 1-of-2 free throws for a 90-79 lead with seven seconds remaining. The Cowboys 3-point shot to tie the game came up short, but a tip-in by NMHU as time expired earned the Mavericks a 90-89 victory.

MSC will look to clinch the west division title Saturday night at CSU-Pueblo. MSC has clinched a home playoff game Tuesday night (7 pm) at Brownson Arena. The top four teams host a first round game with the winners advancing to the RMAC Shootout in Pueblo on March 6-7. The Mavericks opponent is yet to be determined.
