Mesa State (13-10, 10-5) had four players in double digit including Ryan Mathews' game high 27 points in the Mavericks 86-77 win over visiting Western New Mexico University (8-14, 4-10). MSC held a three point (39-36) halftime lead and led by as many as 21 points with 9:43 remaining in regulation. The Mustangs pulled to within four points with 43 seconds left before a layup by Sean Flohr and two free throws by Mathews sealed the victory.
Flohr finished with 18 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, his last block coming with 31 seconds left and the Mustangs trailing by just five points. Flohr blocked the shot, pulled down the rebound and scored the layup to give the Mavs an 84-77 lead. Mathews and Flohr combined for eight 3-pointers (four each), 11 rebounds and 45 points. Kurt Bangle and Jake Swartzendruber finished with 11 points each. Jase Herl led all players with 11 rebounds and six assists.
MSC shot 50.8 percent (30-59) from the field and held a 40-35 rebound edge over the Mustangs. WNMU shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field and four players scoring in double digits.
