Mesa State men's basketball team opened the 2009-2010 season with a 92-64 victory over Asuza Pacific at the Colorado Mines Oredigger Classic in Golden.
MSC had five players in double digits led by Mike Dominguez's team high 21 points. Dominguez was 7 for 11 from the field and a perfect 6 for 6 from the foul line. Lance Fite recorded a double-double off the bench finishing with 18 points and a game high 11 rebounds.
Senior Jase Herl nearly registered a triple double with 15 points, nine rebounds and a game high nine assists. Michael Bear and Ryan Mortensen finished with 10 points each.
The Mavericks led 43-35 at half and shot 54.5 percent for the game. Asuza Pacific entered the game 3-0 and dropped its first game of the year as the Mavericks held them to a 38.2 percent (21-55) shooting from the floor. MSC out rebounded the Cougars 40-26.
MSC led by eight at halftime and opened the second half with a lay-up by Justin Ashbaugh for a 45-35 lead. MSC held a double digit lead the entire second half.
Mesa State will play Southwestern Assemblies of God (TX) Saturday, 5 p.m.
