GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's golf team holds a one shot lead after the first round of the Maverick Challenge, played in blustery conditions here on Saturday morning at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa.
Led by
Hayden Hawley, who is tied for third place in the individual standings, and
Anju Ogi, who is tied for fifth, the Mavericks registered a team score of 324 (+36) to lead the Westminster University Griffins, who have the top two individuals heading into Sunday's second round.
Chadron State College is just three shots further back at 328 (+40) while Adams State University is well back at 407 (+119) in fourth place.
The 28-player field averaged 87.79 strokes in the difficult conditions that permitted just 39 combined birdies throughout the entire round.
Ashley Lam, the 2025 event's champion is tied for the lead with Westminster teammate Madalyn Hadley atop the individual standings after both carded rounds of 75 (+3) on the par-72, 6,024-yard track.
Hadley is playing as an individual and was not figured into the Griffins' team score.
Meanwhile, Hawley made two birdies in her round of 79 (+7).
Ogi had three birdies and is just one shot behind her freshman teammate at 80 (+8).
Maverick sophomore
Mackenzie Goudreau, playing as an individual, is also inside the top ten in an eighth place tie at 81 (+9) while
Libby Bourassa is tied for tenth at 82 (+10).
Hunter Gledhill also contributed towards the Maverick lead and is in 12
th place at 83 (+11).
Payton Panzeri's 86 and
McKenzie Dolph's 90 were dropped from the team score in the tournaments, play six, score four format.
CMU's
Becca Washington is also playing as an individual and finished with an 89 in the opening round to stand 16
th.
Sunday's second round is slated for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
