GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team played to a pair of run rule victories this afternoon as they swept their first day doubleheader over Adams State University at CMU Softball Field.
This was the Mavericks first time this season to run-rule an opponent twice in one day with them winning game one 9-0 in five innings and game two 12-4 in six innings.
Both games were a part of the Mavs' Strikeout Cancer Day as well which featured CMU wearing pink jerseys and having pink shirts and trinkets for sale at the field. All proceeds from the event went to childhood cancer research.
Head Coach Mercedes Bohte's daughter Ivy was also recognized with throwing out the first pitch as she is now cancer-free a year after her diagnosis.
With the pair of wins the Mavs moved to 15-11 on the season while improving to 14-4 in RMAC play. The Grizzles fell to 6-22 (5-13 RMAC) while losing their third and fourth games in a row.
Below is a short recap of each game:
GAME 1 (CMU 9, ASU 0; 5 inn.):
The Mavs played to their second shutout victory of the season to begin the day as they took care of the Grizzlies in five innings.
The last time Colorado Mesa shutout an opponent was on Feb. 6 against Cal State San Bernadino by a score of 4-0.
The Mavs were able to make this shutout happen two innings shorter this time as they capitalized on two crooked numbers to bolster the offense.
They put up four runs in the second inning and then five in the fourth with Sophia Tassinari backing the offense with a four-hitter in the circle.
Tassinari limited the Grizzlies to only seven baserunners while collecting her eighth complete game of the season. With the win she improved to 9-5.
For the offense, in the second inning both Makayla Westmoreland and TK Landes were able to bring in two runs each with Westmoreland owning a double and Landes homering to centerfield.
The Mavs led 4-0 at that point before blowing the game out of the water in the fourth inning with them then adding five runs on five hits and one error.
Ava Stephens brought in the first run on a fielder's choice before the group of Khloe Kubitschek, Molli Magaña and Cailynn Parsons all singled in the rest.
11 batters came to the plate that inning with CMU finishing the game at 11 hits total.
Kamdyn Hagerty, Parsons, Westmoreland and Landes all led that group with two hits apiece.
GAME 2 (CMU 12, ASU 4; 6 inn.):
Continuing to dominate offensively, the Mavs broke away from a two-run game in the sixth inning to conclude the day with them winning by run-rule again.
The Mavs concluded it with them scoring six runs in the sixth after it was priorly a 6-4 game through five and half innings.
The Grizzlies led early in the contest with them scoring two runs in both the first and second innings as they totaled six hits during that time and forced CMU to go to their bullpen.
Luckily the Maverick offense was able to respond in the second and third innings to claim the lead with them putting up six runs on two three-run frames.
Makayla Westmoreland was responsible for all three of those runs in the second inning with her hitting her second home run of the season on a three-run long ball.
Ava Stephens then followed her up in the third inning with her hitting a solo shot for her first collegiate home run.
Olivia Litzen added to Stephens' run with a sacrifice fly with Kamdyn Hagerty then scoring the sixth run on a wild pitch.
The next five frames were scoreless with pitching holding each team at bay.
Freshman Lacie Rodabaugh made her second appearance of the season in the circle during that time with her going four innings of relief and allowing zero hits.
It was in the fateful sixth inning that the Mavs ended the game earlier than expected with them totaling just three hits and taking advantage of five walks and two wild pitches.
Hagerty, Litzen and Brynn Escobar all drove in runs that inning while the duo of Khloe Kubitschek and Jackie Oster each came in on wild pitches.
Escobar's single to centerfield was the game-ending hit as two runs scored.
The Mavs only out-hit the Grizzlies 8-6 in the game but were walked 11 times.
Seven different players had hits for Colorado Mesa with Molli Magaña being the only to own multiple.
Rodabaugh was credited with the win as she earned his first collegiate decision.
