GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team closed out their conference series against Adams State University this afternoon with a 4-game sweep of the Grizzlies at CMU Softball Field.
This was the Mavericks first series sweep of the season with them now winning five straight conference series. They are just one of two schools in the RMAC to accomplish that feat.
The Mavs run-ruled the Grizzlies 14-4 in five innings in their first game of the day to win the series with them then securing the sweep in a high-scoring game four, 12-8.
Over the course of the entire series the Mavs outscored the Grizzlies 47-16 while also totaling 47 hits. Their 17 hits in game four was a new game-high this season and the first time they've totaled that amount since March 9, 2025 against New Mexico Highlands.
Colorado Mesa now owns a four-game winning streak with them improving to 17-11 (16-4 RMAC). Adams State has lost six in a row instead with them dropping to 6-24 (5-15 RMAC).
Below is a short recap of each game:
GAME 1 (CMU 14, ASU 4; 5 inn.):
The Mavs played to their third consecutive run-rule victory of the weekend in game one of the day as they used a nine-run second inning to put the Grizzlies down early.
During that nine-run second they had just four hits but were able to bring 13 batters to the plate.
The Mavs loaded the bases with three batters to start before Makayla Westmoreland was able to work a walk for the game's first run.
TK Landes brought in the next run on a fielder's choice with Brynn Escobar then driving in a pair on a single to right field.
Landes stole home for the game's fifth run with the group of Khloe Kubitschek, Paige Pierce and Cailynn Parsons driving in the final four runs of the frame. Kubitschek's RBI came on a fielder's choice with Pierce having a single and Parsons adding a double.
The Grizzlies knocked in three runs in the top of the third on a trio of singles to make it 9-3 but not before April Neill responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the third to get one run back.
ASU added one more run in the top of the fourth on another single but saw that as their last time scoring in the game.
The Mavs proceeded to then put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth to bring the game back into run-rule territory.
Kubitschek had a solo shot home run that inning while Jenna Salcido, Landes and Neill each had RBIs.
The Grizzlies were retired in order in the top of the fifth to secure the mercy rule shortly after.
Sophia Tassinari earned her 10th win of the season in the circle while going the first three innings and allowing just three runs. She gave way to Marisa Nehm who closed out the final two innings while only allowing one run on one hit.
The Mavs accumulated 11 hits in the game while being walked six times.
Eight different players had RBIs as well with five of them having two apiece.
GAME 2 (CMU 12, ASU 8):
Coming out on top of a slug fest, the Mavs secured the series sweep in game four of the day with them recording 17 hits and outscoring the Grizzlies 8-4 through the final three and a half innings.
Five of the seven innings in today's game featured runs being scored with eight of CMU's starters having a hit.
Through the first two innings the score was just 1-0 in favor of the Grizzlies with there only being two clean frames the rest of the way.
ASU got their lone run during that time in the first inning thanks to a bases loaded walk.
They then added to that lead in the third with them scoring three more runs from a wild pitch, bases loaded hit by pitch and a single to left field.
The Grizzlies loaded the bases three separate times during the game with CMU being guilty of 11 free passes.
Despite trailing by four, the Mavs were able to tie the game back up in the bottom of the third inning with them scoring four runs on five hits.
Molli Magaña had a two-run home run that inning to get things started with Cailynn Parsons then doubling in another run and Olivia Litzen singling in one as well.
Colorado Mesa continued their offensive push soon after in the fourth inning with them hitting three separate solo shot home runs and using a double to score five more runs.
Brynn Escobar, Magaña and Kamdyn Hagerty all hit those home runs with Magaña's and Hagerty's coming in back-to-back at bats.
Makayla Westmoreland followed the home runs with a two-out double to extend the lead and bring in two more runs.
Adams State's responded with two runs themselves on a home run and error in the top of the fifth but not before the Mavs scored again in the bottom of the frame as well.
April Neill would hit a two-run single for the Mavs during that time to match the Grizzlies with the game now sitting at 11-6.
ASU scored once more in the top of the sixth on a two-run single to make it a four-run difference, but the runs were for nothing as Escobar got them back in the bottom of inning on a two-run single herself.
The Grizzlies managed a double in the top of the seventh inning to flirt with a comeback but grounded out to end the game shortly after.
Marisa Nehm earned the win in relief while pitching 2.2 innings after coming in following the first collegiate start of Lacie Rodabaugh.
Sophia Tassinari went the final two innings of the game after Nehm to earn her second save of the season.
Six different Mavs had multi-hit performances with there being a total of seven extra base hits to take place.
Escobar led all players on the day while going 4-5 and scoring three runs.
Neill added a 3-4 performance while Kubitschek, Magaña, Parsons and Westmoreland each had two hits apiece.
