Mavs looking to stop slide against upstart Griffins in SLC

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team will look to reverse a trend of close losses as they head to Salt Lake City, Utah for a Saturday afternoon clash with the Westminster University Griffins, who have been the surprise of the early Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season.

The Mavericks are 1-7 overall, 0-1 in RMAC play and have lost three straight, by a combined four goals.

The Griffins have won three straight, are 4-2 overall and lead the conference standings at 2-0 after shocking nationally-ranked Regis last weekend.

The first draw for Saturday's match-up is slated for 1 p.m. and can be seen with a subscription to the RMAC Network (more information below).  Live statistics will also be available at the link above.

Last Time Out

The Mavericks dropped their RMAC opener by an 8-7 count to UCCS last Sunday.

The Mavs took a 4-0 lead and led 4-1 at the half in a great defensive effort, but were outscored 5-2 in the third quarter as the Mountain Liong hung on for the win, their first in the rivalry.

CMU's Courtney Havel scored four goals while Kaylee Kittle added two.

Sophie Astone also matched career-highs with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Back-to-back fours

Maverick senior attack Courtney Havel has recorded back-to-back 4-goal games and now stands third on the team with ten goals, all of which have come in the last four games after she did not score in her first four.

The Lake Oswego, Oregon native as named as the RMAC Attacker of the Year in 2025 and led the Mavs with 46 goals last season.

Scoring Streak

Maverick sophomore Kaylee Kittle has scored at least one goal in the last four and seven of the Mavs' eight games, recording 16 in total.  She ranks sixth in the RMAC for goal scoring.

Point Watch

Carson Dickey leads the Mavericks with 21 points and 17 goals this season.  The Maverick senior is tied for third in the RMAC for goals and ranks fourth in assists.

She also has 88 career goals and 118 points and with just one more goal or assist will move into a tie for tenth on the Mavs' all-time points leader list with former teammate Ali Bryant.

Dickey already ranks ninth in CMU history for career goals and with 12 more, would become just the seventh Maverick to reach the century mark.

Coach's Corner

Ashley Delaney is in her third year as the Mavs' head coach and her seventh on the CMU staff after serving as an assistant for the four previous seasons from 2020-23.

The Mavs have gone 11-6 in both of Delaney's previous years as a head coach and posted a 33-19 combined record in her four years as an assistant under two previous head coaches.

She was named as the RMAC Coach of the Year in 2025 after leading the Mavs to a share of the RMAC Regular Season Championship and to hosting rights of the RMAC Tournament for the first time in program history.

She also helped the Mavs win a share of the RMAC crown in 2023 when she was an assistant coach.  The Mavericks are a combined 56-37 with her on the coaching staff and have played in all five RMAC Tournament Championship games with her on the staff.

Counting this year, Delaney now has a 23-19 record as the Mavs' head coach.

She is 5-0 against Westminster in her time as a head coach.  The Mavericks are 11-0 against the Griffins with her on the sideline.

Know Your Foe

The Griffins have been the surprise of the RMAC thus far.  Picked fourth in the preseason coaches' poll after finishing in that spot regularly in recent years, the Griffins are off to a 2-0 start in conference play and have won three straight overall.

They defeated UCCS and nationally-ranked Regis by 12-11 margins last week at home and then crushed William Jewell in non-conference play on Wednesday by a 20-7 margin.

The win over Regis, ranked 15th nationally at the time, was the first in their history.

Marianna Dick was named as the RMAC's Defensive Player of the Week after she recorded 13 caused turnovers and nine ground balls in the weekend conference wins.  She matcher her own program record with seven caused turnovers against UCCS and leads the RMAC with 28 overall this season.

Dick also ranks second in the RMAC for ground balls per game (3.67).

Olivia Petrosky and Holly Shoughro lead the Griffin attack and have combined for 25 goals, with Petrosky scoring 13.  Shoughro and Ava Deakins are tied for the team lead with 17 points as Deakins already has 11 assists to rank second in the RMAC and first with her per game average of 1.83.

Jessie Giacomazzi leads the team with ten draw controls and has seven goals and nine points as well.

Three different Griffins have played in net with Sienna Garcia and Kaitlyn Parish receiving the most time.  Garcia has a 10.16 goals against average and .417 save percentage while Parish has a 12.36 goals against average and .393 minutes with more time in net but fewer starts.

Series History

The Mavs have dominated the all-time series with Westminster, winning the last 22 meetings while posting a 23-1 all-time record against the Griffins.  They are 11-0 against them in Salt Lake City.

The Griffins' only win of the rivalry was on Apr. 6, 2012.
