Mavs take two from Cowgirls with pair of 10-run games

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team scored 10 runs in two games this afternoon as they took down the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands University twice at NMHU Softball Field.

The Mavericks dominated offensively in each of their wins with them run-ruling the Cowgirls 10-1 in five innings in game one before winning 10-3 in game two.

The Mavs are now 12-10 overall this season while improving to 11-3 in the RMAC. New Mexico Highlands drops to 7-19 (5-9 RMAC).

Below is a short recap of each game:

GAME 1 (CMU 10, NMHU 1; 5 inn.):

Opening the series with a strong offensive showing, the Mavs used three crooked numbers to win game one of the day as they handled the Cowgirls in five innings.

The Mavs totaled 13 hits in the win while seven of the team's starters recorded at least one hit apiece.

The crooked numbers came in the second, third and fifth innings with the Mavs never trailing after taking the lead in the second inning.

They scored three runs in the second with them recording four hits and having five batters reach base.

TK Landes tripled in the first two runs that frame with Ava Stephens and Allison Lindsay hitting singles to bring in the other two.

Landes then doubled in another pair of runs in the third inning before Brynn Escobar brought in two as well on a single.

The Cowgirls got their lone run back in the fourth inning on three of their four hits coming during that frame.

The Mavs didn't manage any runs in the fourth themselves but were able to build their on their lead in the fifth as Landes once again came through with an RBI single. Stephens also joined her with a two RBI single to get the Mavs into run-rule contention.

Colorado Mesa faced the minimum in bottom of the fifth to end the game early and record their second mercy-rule victory of the season.

Sophia Tassinari went all five innings in the circle with this being her sixth complete game of the spring. She allowed just four hits while walking one and striking out one.

Of the Mavs 13 hits, five different players had multi-hit games. Landes led that group going a perfect 3-3 while having two of the team's extra base hits. She had four RBIs while Stephens added three.

GAME 2 (CMU 10, NMHU 3):

The Mavs scored 10 runs again in the second game of the day while recording 17 hits which was a new season high.

The game went the full seven innings this time with the Mavs scoring in four of the frames, including a four-run top of the seventh.

Allison Lindsay started the scoring for the Mavs early on with her hitting a two-run home run in the first inning.

Khloe Kubitschek then hit another two-run home run in the third inning to make it 4-0.

The Cowgirls got two runs back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly and an error but were matched by the Mavs soon after in the fourth.

Makayla Westmoreland hammered a solo shot home run that inning to join the long ball parade with Kubitschek following her on an RBI double.

One more run was managed by the Cowgirls in the bottom of the fourth inning on another sacrifice fly but that would be all the offense they could muster.

Paige Pierce added a double in the seventh to bring in the game's seventh run with TK Landes then putting the cherry on top with a three-run home run.

Marisa Nehm earned the win in the circle, improving to 5-2 this season. She went six innings while allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned). Sophia Tassinari closed out the seventh inning for her second appearance of the day.

Eight different players were responsible for the 17 hits with Westmoreland leading the team going 4-4.

Kubitschek was 3-5 herself while the quarter of Stephens, Lindsay, Litzen and Landes each had two hits apiece.

This was the Mavs' most home runs in a game this season with the team now having 15 total.

UP NEXT:

The Mavs and Cowgirls will continue the series tomorrow when they take part in another double header starting at 11 a.m.
