LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team concluded the DII West Coast Challenge yesterday evening falling twice in their final two games.
The Mavericks lost to No. 17 Cal State East Bay and Vanguard University with this being their only nonconference action of the season before beginning conference play later this month.
They currently sit at 1-7 overall with their lone win coming against Cal State San Bernadino.
Below is a short recap of each game.
GAME 1 (#17 CSUEB 6, CMU, 0):
The Mavs fell by a score of 6-0 in their morning opener as dominant pitching held them at bay.
Colorado Mesa was able to evade danger early in the game as they escaped bases loaded jams in both the second and third innings.
Both team's pitching through the first three innings kept the game scoreless before a run was finally managed in the top of the fourth.
The Pioneers scored four runs in that inning with them collecting four hits and taking advantage of two CMU errors.
They later added two more runs in the fifth with neither team being able to score past that point.
The Mavs were held two hits in the loss with Allison Lindsay and Tegan Medina each having one apiece.
Sophia Tassinari allowed just one earned run over 3.2 innings pitched while being registered the loss. Marisa Nehm pitched the final 3.1 innings.
GAME 2 (VU 11, CMU, 0; 5 innings):
The Mavs fell in their final game of the tournament after nine runs were scored in the first two innings against them and later damage led to a run-rule decision.
The Lions tacked on three runs in the first and six in the second with them then adding a pair in the fifth.
The Mavs recorded just three base runners in the game while only managing two hits.
Molli Magaña and Allison Lindsay each had those hits with the only other player to reach base in the game being Tegan Medina on a walk.
Marisa Nehm and Sophia Tassinari combined again to pitch the five-inning affair with Nehm taking the loss.
