GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 7 Colorado Mesa sent their nine seniors out on a high note on Saturday (Feb. 7) in Brownson Arena as the Mavericks claimed nine of the 11 eleven bouts in a 34-12 over the visiting Chadron State Eagles on Senior Night.
The Mavericks won the first four bouts of the dual including two by pin. Third-ranked
Mia Zuniga pinned RMAC Champion Brianna Vollendroff at the 2:01 mark of the 103-pound bout while
Lorianna Piestewa pinned Ana Rojas Zamora at 1:41 at 124-pounds.
Adriana Gomez and Rylee Balcazar decided to have an RMAC Championship rematch at 110 pounds. After wrestling to a 7-7 criteria victory, Gomez made quick work of her opponent and claimed a 10-0 technical fall victory at the 1:26 mark of the bout.
Chadron State secured back-to-back wins by pin at 131 and 138 pounds before the Mavericks won the final four bouts.
Gretchen Donally picked up a 12-2 technical fall win at 3:35 before
Celina Preston picked up a win by forfeit at 160 pounds.
Kim Carlin earned a pin of Cosette Derosiers in the fastest time of the night at the 41 second mark of her bout at 180 pounds. That set up the match of the night.
Sixth-ranked
Jayleen Sekona took on Chadron State's Esther Peters at 207 pounds in a matchup of two of the top wrestlers at the weight. Sekona took a 6-4 lead into the intermission and was able to score a late takedown in the waning second of the bout for an 8-4 win.
Colorado Mesa finishes the regular season with an 11-8 record and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Mavericks will now be off until the NCAA Regional Tournament in St. Charles, Mo. and hosted by Lindenwood. Wrestling is scheduled to begin on Saturday, February 21 and conclude on Sunday February 22 with the top three finishers at each weight qualifying for the first-ever NCAA Women's Wrestling Championship.
