KEARNEY, Neb.— Colorado Mesa University freshman Valentina Gonzalez won both of her matches to lead the Mavericks in their Saturday morning dual at the University of Nebraska-Kearney here at the Lopers' Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
The Lopers won the dual to improve to 3-0 while the Mavericks wrapped up a 1-2 weekend while falling to 3-5 overall.
Gonzalez won her No. 2 singles match over Julia Wartecka, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) after teaming with fellow freshman Sophie Hartman in a 6-4 No. 3 doubles win over Valentina Zamora and Augstina Abdo. The Mav youngsters now have ten doubles wins this season.
However, the Lopers squeaked out 7-5 wins in the other two doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead before claiming four of the six singles affairs.
CMU's Delia Maier, who went 4-0 to lead the Mavs to a doubleheader split on Friday, also capped a strong weekend with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Jasmine Ben Aba at No. 4 singles to give the Mavs their other team point.
After spending the past two weekends indoors in Idaho and Nebraska, the Mavs will head to warmer weather in the Phoenix metropolitan area for three more duals next Friday and Saturday. That stretch begins on Friday (Feb. 20) with a key NCAA Division II South Central Regional match-up against Western New Mexico in Glendale.
