KEARNEY, Neb.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team dominated Hastings, 7-0 before dropping a 5-2 decision to Northwest Missouri State during a Friday split here in the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
Delia Maier won all four of her matches to lead the Mavericks while
Catalina Ballon and
Devyn Rodriguez both went 3-1 throughout the afternoon and evening.
Maier won both of her No. 4 singles matches and teamed with Ballon for a pair of No. 2 doubles victories. Rodriguez, playing in the top singles flight against both the Broncos and Bearcats, also came from behind to claim a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) win over Northwest Missouri State's Miru Nonaka after dominating Josline Carter of Hastings, 6-0, 6-2.
She and
Jade Brilhante were also 6-0 winners over Carter and Victoria Harris in the No. 1 doubles match against Hastings, who suffered its first loss in three outings this spring.
The Mavs dropped just four total games and won nine singles sets by 6-0 margins in the afternoon dual against the Broncos. They also swept the doubles matches by 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1 margins.
Maier and Ballon were also able to win their No. 2 doubles match by a 6-4 scoreline over Nonaka and Chiharu Ito of Northwest Missouri State although the Bearcats picked up a 7-5 win at No. 3 to take the doubles point.
Rodriguez then answered back with her win over Nonaka, tabbed tenth in the ITA's Central Regional rankings, before Majra Djokic and Ito won at No. 2 and 3 singles to give the Bearcats a 3-1 lead.
They then clinched the dual with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
Meanwhile, Maier was able to close out Laura Prieto Sieiro, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 4 singles to put the Mavs' other team point on the board.
Elsewhere,
Sophie Hartman and
Jane Steur split starts at No. 6 as Hartman won, 6-0, 6-0 against Hastings's Kayleigh Cetak.
Brilhante also beat Harris by identical 6-0, 6-0 singles scores at No. 3 singles while
Valentina Gonzalez was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 2 over the Broncos' Cara Ansbach.
Ballon was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 5 over Abby Harveson in the afternoon dual.
Maier also won, 6-1, 6-0 over Lexi Benson at No. 4.
The Mavericks will close out the weekend trip with a Saturday morning encounter against the host Nebraska-Kearney Lopers.
