#22 Mavericks fall in dual finale in Gunnison

GUNNISON, Colo. – The No. 22 Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team was swept in the season series with their rival Western Colorado after a 26-18 loss on Friday (Feb. 13) evening in Paul Wright Gymnasium.

One of the big swing matches came in the first bout of the night as Western Colorado's Jabyn Kemble pinned Colorado Mesa's Adonias Cantu in the third period at 6:04. Cantu led Kemble 10-5 entering the period with the Mountaineer choosing the top position and earning the late pin.

The Mavericks did get the pin back at 133 pounds as AJ Hague secured a first period pin of Ty Reeves which evened the dual at 6-6.

Western Colorado went on a two-match streak, winning 141 and 149 pounds by decision setting up the perceived match of the night.

No. 7 Owen Cline for Colorado Mesa faced off with No. 11 Vincent Cabral of Western Colorado in the lone nationally ranked bout of the evening. After wrestling to a scoreless first period, it was all Cline after that as he went ahead 7-2 after the second and went on to an 11-4 victory with Cabral only scoring escape points. The dual score was 12-9 Western after 157 pounds.

Western Colorado and Colorado Mesa traded bonus point victories with the Mountaineers earning major decisions at 165 and 174 pounds while Noah O'Dougherty picked up a technical fall win at 184 pounds and Gabriel Carranza a major decision at 197 pounds. The dual score was 20-18 heading into the 285-pound bout.

Western Colorado's Riley Dean-Butt won the 285-pound by injury default over Ruben Samuelson.

The dual was the final of the regular season with just the Rocky Mountain Open on Sunday in Gunnison left on the schedule.
