GOLDEN, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University freshman
Taiya Carl and
Weston Domich both turned in impressive Maverick debuts as a contingent of CMU field eventers claimed four top five finishes and three new marks on the Mavericks' all-time indoor track & field performers lists during first day action at the Mines Winter Classic here in the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Carl took third in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 3.62 meters (11 feet, 10 ½ inches), moving to second place on the Mavs' all-time performers chart with what was CMU's best mark since 2019.
Meanwhile, Domich took second in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.12 meters (23-4.5) to move into the No. 8 spot. He finished only behind Maverick teammate
Antone Higgs, who was competing unattached.
Addy Kirkpatrick led a group of six Mavericks in the women's half of the event, taking fourth place with a jump of 5.57 meters (18-3.25), just off her career-best of 5.60 meters (18-4.25) from last season's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
In the throws,
Austin Schultz took fifth in the men's shot put with a mark of 15.22 meters (49-11.25), moving up two spots to fifth in CMU history.
Aaliyah Bos led the CMU women with a sixth place throw of 11.43 meters (37-6).
Freshman
Asa Keim also stands in fifth place through four events of the men's heptathlon with 2,512 points. He was second best in the 9-man field in the shot put with a throw of 12.66 meters (41-6.5) after posting a time of 7.62 seconds in the 60-meter dash and a long jump effort of 6.05 meters (19-10.25). He then closed out the day by clearing 1.76 meters (5-9.25) in the high jump.
The meet will continue on Saturday.
CMU athletes also had a contingent of sprinters at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque, highlighted by a school-record time of 20.92 seconds in the 200 meters from transfer
Joseph Randolph.
