ALAMOSA, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's wrestling team used three pins, two 11-0 shutout wins and a forfeit to post a 30-18 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual meet win at Adams State University on Sunday afternoon here in the Grizzlies' Plachy Hall.
The nation's seventh-ranked Mavericks scored the final three bouts and 14 team points to win their tenth dual of the season and improved to 10-8 overall and to 2-1 in RMAC action while the Grizzlies fell to 0-5 overall and to 0-4 in the RMAC.
Adriana Gomez,
Brooke McCurley and
Kimberly Carlin recorded the pins at 110, 131 and 180 pounds as the Mavs scored the final 14 team points of the dual to claim the win.
Meanwhile,
Lorianna Piestewa and
Valerie Glenn also posted technical fall wins at 124 and 160 as the Mavs took the team lead after each of those bouts in a back-and-forth dual that saw the lead change five times.
The Grizzlies won two of the first three bouts by technical fall surrounding Gomez's pin over Katelyn Faczak just after the mid-way point of the second period as the lead changed hands twice.
Down 8-7 after 117 pounds, Piestewa then gave the Mavs an 11-8 lead after win over Bella Devoto at 124 pounds.
McCurley then extended the Mavs lead to 16-8 with her 131-pound pin over Hallie Carter at the 1:51 mark.
However, the Grizzlies roared back to go up 18-16 thanks to a pin at 138 pounds and an injury default win at 145 when
Gretchen Donally was unable to continue.
Glenn then responded giving the Mavs a 20-18 advantage as she took down Amanda Yu, 11-0 after leading 9-0 at the intermission.
Carlin then clinched the Mavs' victory, pinning Briseis StJohn just 98 seconds into 180-pound affair before
Maggie Smith won by forfeit at 207 as the Grizzlies were unable to field a wrestler.
The Mavs also won a pair of quick extra matches, which preceded the official dual.
Alyssa Jackson needed just 61 seconds to record a 10-0 technical fall over Abril Montes while
Taylor Colangelo pinned Elisibeth in just 12 seconds.
The two teams will meet up again in tournament action next Saturday at the RMAC Championships on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy.
